The World Obesity Federation published its annual World Obesity Atlas report on World Obesity Day (4th March). This comprehensive report provides analyses of significant obesity trends, global and regional prevalence projections, national scorecards, and Obesity-NCD Preparedness Rankings evaluating countries' readiness to address obesity and its consequences.

The 2023 World Obesity Atlas sheds light on the alarming economic impact of obesity, predicting that by 2035, 51% of the global population will be affected by overweight or obesity based on current trends. The report warns of a staggering economic impact of US$4.32 trillion by 2035 if prevention and treatment efforts continue to fall short.

This year's report emphasizes the pressing need for comprehensive national action plans to combat obesity and support those affected by this disease. It further highlights the impact of climate change, COVID-19 restrictions, new pandemics, and chemical pollutants on obesity, underlining the urgency for coordinated efforts to address systemic issues.

The Obesity-NCD Preparedness Rankings reveal that obesity levels are rising fastest in low and lower-middle income countries, which are least equipped to respond to the crisis. The report calls for urgent measures to address disparities and implement obesity prevention policies.

The World Obesity Federation's high-level policy event, 'Changing Perspectives and Advancing National Action', reinforced the need for a robust international response to address the global obesity crisis. The report underscores the significance of national action plans and Universal Health Coverage to implement the WHO's Recommendations for the Prevention and Management of Obesity.

The findings of the 2023 World Obesity Atlas should prompt policymakers and civil society to take immediate action, recognizing that the economic impact of obesity is a result of systemic failures in healthcare, food, and support systems. The urgency for tangible commitments and transformative change is now more critical than ever before.
